His Day is Done – A Tribute Poem for Nelson Mandela by Dr. Maya Angelou
On Thursday, December 5, 2013 as a global family we began to mourn the loss of Nelson Mandela. A man whose whole life exemplified, grace, honor, strength of courage, diligence and a strong commitment to the basic belief that all men were created to be free. Mr. Mandela served 27 years as a political prisoner for his strong beliefs in his native country of South Africa. In his life time, he saw Apartheid, abolished and himself (a black man) upon his release be elected as his country’s first democratically elected president. From that illustrious position, he stirred the reins of power, showing the world that real power is found in…
Black Girls…Let’s Talk About Your Health, Ladies!
Earlier this month I had my first visit to my new local gynecologist, and I am almost ashamed to say it… It was also my first visit ever to one. I am now a month away from turning 35 and married. As an African American female that has been surrounded by family members that have worked in the Health Care industry my entire life; including some of my aunts, cousins my grandmother and even my mother the fact it took me so long to go is offensive. My oldest best friend is even a doctor! However, I am woman enough to admit my truth. I corrected the error and made…

Connecting the dots… I already know you know how to drive.
Friday, August 30, 2013 Connecting the dots… I already know you know how to drive. Today, I will be going for my second attempt at passing my road test in Texas. I am confident I will pass it this time. Amazingly, I have never felt so much at peace about a road test then I do today. The Coach is a bit concerned because he is not sure if he will be able to leave the job early enough to get me to the testing site for my appointment. I am confident he will, so I am not sweating it. Too many things have been lining themselves up for me not to…
The 24 Hour Rule: Win or Lose
This past Friday October 4th, the HS Football team that my husband assistant coaches here in Houston, TX lost its first game of the regular season. Before this game we were 3-0 (we were actually 4-0; one game was cancelled by our opponent due to inclement weather and other things.) This loss stung just a bit more because the game was played against our closest district rivals. We had never lost a game at home against them, it was homecoming for us, and the game was televised locally. Our team was recently featured in a local HS athletes’ magazine as the cover story. Last year we had an undefeated regular season;…

By Myself… I Could Not Even Get Out of The Parking Lot! (Part 1 of 2)
“In all your ways know, recognize, and acknowledge Him, and He will direct and make straight and plain your paths.” – Proverbs 3:6 Amplified “Pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall.” – Proverbs 16:18 Amplified July 2nd 2013 Last week I took my road test for the first time in Texas and failed. I had become crippled by the spirit of fear. When I went to take the test I was not sure about my performance of one particular driving maneuver. That lack of confidence paralyzed me so that I was not able to get out of the DPS (Department of Public Safety / Department of Motor Vehicle)…
