There’s something deeply sobering about the way people react when you step into your purpose—especially when those people are the ones who know you best.
Mark 6:1-29 NLT is a chapter that doesn’t just speak—it shouts. It tells two stories that seem separate but are inextricably linked by a common theme: the cost of calling.
Today, while reading one of my devotionals, I found myself transfixed by the story of John the Baptist’s death. It’s a story of manipulation, misplaced desires, and the tragic consequences of living out your purpose in a world that doesn’t always want to hear the truth.
King Herod had a complex relationship with John. He respected him, even feared him, knowing that John was a righteous and holy man. Yet his chosen partner, Herodias—his brother Philip’s former wife—harbored a deep hatred for John because he condemned their union, which was against God’s commandments.
Herodias was determined to silence John. She couldn’t do it alone, so she used a weapon she knew would work—her own daughter. At a banquet, Herodias’s daughter performed a dance that so pleased Herod that he made a reckless vow, promising her anything she desired, even up to half of his kingdom.
But the young girl didn’t know what to ask for. In her innocence, she went to her mother, who seized the opportunity. Herodias’s wicked heart gave the answer—she asked for the head of John the Baptist on a platter.
Herod, trapped by his pride and his impulsive promise in front of his guests, gave in. And John the Baptist—a voice of truth—was silenced by deceit.
This story struck me so deeply because, as a mother, I recognize the immense influence I have over my children. I pray I never use that influence to manipulate or advance my own desires. I pray I never weaponize their ignorance for selfish gain.
Both Herod and Herodias allowed their lust, pride, and selfishness to pull them off their paths. One allowed lust to cloud his judgment, while the other let hatred drive her to destroy.
But here is the truth: Our choices don’t just affect us. They ripple through generations.
So I ask you today—who are you allowing to influence your path? What desires are you nurturing? Are you walking in integrity, or are you letting someone else’s agenda write your story?
Scripture Takeaway:
Mark 6:4-5 NLT: “Then Jesus told them, ‘A prophet is honored everywhere except in his own hometown and among his relatives and his own family.’ And because of their unbelief, He couldn’t do any miracles among them except to place His hands on a few sick people and heal them.”
