From Throwback Thursday to Flashback Friday to Saturday and Beyond: Let the Purging Begin!

“To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.” — Ecclesiastes 3:1 (NLT)

Every summer, like clockwork, I feel the urge to declutter. It’s almost as if the heat coaxes my spirit into reflection—inviting me to clear out what no longer serves me, so I can make room for what’s next.

A few years ago, while recovering from surgery, I remember sorting through stacks of files and boxes tucked away in storage. I’m not sure how deep that purge went, but I do recall facing pieces of my past and wondering why I’d held on to some things for so long. This year, I’m going deeper.

I’ve got goals: finalize important documents, move forward with book ideas, and—yes—finally close out the storage unit I’ve been avoiding. But before I can move forward, I need to sort, shred, and surrender.

This morning, the mission began upstairs.

The second floor of our house—where the kids primarily reside—was ground zero. Yesterday, I shredded piles of paper: junk mail, school projects, and those infamous “stuff it in a drawer before company comes” folders we all pretend don’t exist.

Going through the garage was a whole vibe. It felt like Christmas in May. I found things I didn’t know I still had—like an over-the-door basketball hoop perfect for Tyson (our in-house hoop dreamer) and a compact deep fryer I’d tucked away when the air fryer took over. But let’s be real: there’s nothing like a deep-fried, Cajun-seasoned piece of white fish. Crunchy on the outside, tender on the inside—hallelujah and amen.

Once the garage is in order—hopefully by midweek—I plan to sort through what’s left and finally decide what’s worth keeping in storage, and what needs to go. Because here’s the truth: I’ve been paying to store things I forgot I even owned, holding onto clutter like it held my future.

Maybe I thought by now we’d be in our “forever home.” But as life has lovingly reminded me: forever isn’t promised… but today is. So, I’m choosing to embrace the now. To transform this house into a sanctuary—not just a place to sleep, but a space that breathes with life, laughter, and purpose.

So, from Throwback Thursday to Flashback Friday to Saturday and beyond… let the purging begin.

🪞 Reflection Question:

What are you holding onto that’s taking up space—physically, emotionally, or spiritually?

🛠️ Call to Action:

Take one small step this weekend toward clearing out the old to make space for the new. Whether it’s a drawer, a closet, or a hidden memory—release it. Let your now become the seedbed for what’s next.
