Music has a unique ability to rise above the confines of language, allowing us to experience emotions that words often fail to capture. While language has its place, music speaks to us in a way that transcends barriers.
As I drove to church today to join my fellow choir members in ministry, I took a moment to reflect on how the Music Department has always felt like my sanctuary. Over the past two decades, regardless of the various roles I’ve embraced within my church, the Music Department and its community have been instrumental in shaping my life and that of my family. Close behind in significance has been the Audio and Visual (Media) Department.
Finding Stability Through Worship
In my mid-twenties, after the devastating and unexpected loss of my father at just 22, I found myself yearning for stability. It was during this challenging period that I recommitted my life to Christ, discovering comfort and encouragement within the church community. Looking back, I recognize just how pivotal this choice was.
At that time, I had been ensnared in a toxic relationship, feeling adrift and out of sync. I will always be grateful for the foundational teachings I absorbed during this time, which have had a lasting impact on my life.
The church I joined became much more than a place for worship—it transformed into a beacon of purpose and motivation. I was fortunate to serve in a church plant that originated from a larger megachurch, eventually taking on roles in leading other church plants and extensions of the original international ministries.
A Calling to Serve
Becoming part of a church plant allowed me to dive in as both a member and a servant-leader right from the first interest meeting. During the onboarding process, representatives from the home church assessed my musical and administrative talents. I began my journey as an administrator for the choir and assistant to the director.
I first learned about my future Senior Pastors through their internationally syndicated television show, which aired on major local channels. I happened to be home sick from work one day when I decided to watch an entire sermon. Typically, I wouldn’t be home during the broadcast time, so I turned to their online messages for 30 consecutive days.
It felt like I was receiving spiritual nourishment for the first time as an adult. When I discovered that a church was being established in my area, I eagerly attended the interest meeting, knowing I wanted to contribute from the outset and believing that the choir and Music Department were where I belonged.
The Power of Music and Media in Ministry
Throughout my journey, I have witnessed how the Music and Audio/Visual/Media Departments are essential to sharing God’s Word, translating teachings from the pulpit into tangible expressions that congregants can take with them for contemplation.
Whether through heartfelt lyrics or engaging visuals shared on social media, both departments collaborate seamlessly to cultivate an environment ripe for collective worship. These elements not only enhance the worship experience but also help carry the message beyond the walls of the church, touching lives in ways we may never fully realize.
Gratitude for the Journey
I am profoundly thankful for the chance to be a part of this extended family. Music, with its power to convey emotions that words cannot, has enabled me to serve and communicate in a universal way, and for that, I am sincerely grateful.
As I reflect on over 20 years at my church, I cherish the sense of support and belonging I have found through the Music Department, alongside the invaluable contributions of the Audio and Visual team. Together, they enhance our worship experience, infusing it with the grace and power of music, while effectively conveying God’s message to our congregation.
Final Thoughts
Serving in ministry has not only been an opportunity to give but also to receive. The connections I’ve made, the lessons I’ve learned, and the ways I’ve grown in my faith continue to shape me daily. Worship is more than a song—it is a way of life, a form of service, and a reminder that God’s presence is always with us.
